WEST HOLLYWOOD—On Tuesday, February 17, the city of West Hollywood announced that it is providing sandbags to residents and businesses to prepare for heavy rains this week. West Hollywood is offering a limited supply of free sand-filled sandbags that can help direct flowing water away from structures.

Free sandbags are limited to 10 per resident or business while supplies last. They are available for pick-up by appointment at West Hollywood’s Operations Center, located at 7317 Romaine Street. Residents and business owners may call (323) 848-6591 or send an email to phertz@weho.org to schedule an appointment to pick up sandbags on Tuesday, February 17; Wednesday, February 18; and Thursday, February 19 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Sandbags are available only while supplies last.

During rains, stay prepared:

-Keep emergency supplies, such as a flashlight, water, food, a first-aid kit, portable radio, and extra batteries on-hand and easily accessible.

-Clear all drains and rain gutters on your property and dispose of all trash and yard trimmings properly to avoid blocking drains.

-Know how to turn off utilities.

-Monitor forecasts to be aware of weather that may impact the area.

As a reminder, driving in rain can be dangerous. Rainy conditions are directly associated with higher accident rates. Adjust driving style for wet roads and reduced visibility. The following tips will help ensure driving safely during rainy days: adjust travel plans; slow down; turn on headlights; use windshield wipers; maintain a safe distance; avoid heavy braking; watch for standing water and do not cross flooded roadways; let off the accelerator when hydroplaning; and ventilate your car during rain.

MALIBU—On Saturday, February 14, the city of Malibu posted on its Facebook page that Los Angeles County issued an Evacuation Warning for the Palisades Fire burn scar areas, effective Sunday, February 15 starting at 9 p.m. due to potential mud & debris flows from forecasted moderate-to-heavy rains starting late night Sunday. Heaviest rain expected Sunday night through Monday night, with lighter rain expected through Thursday.

Residents in the burn scar area should GET SET for possible evacuations. Prepare loved ones, pets, and essential supplies. Those needing extra time to evacuate should consider leaving early. This is for Evacuation Zone MAL-C111, from Topanga Beach Drive westward to Carbon Beach Terrace). Topanga Canyon Boulevard will be closed from PCH to Grand View Drive starting Sunday, February 15 at 10 p.m.

Be prepared for mudslides, debris flows, rocks, and water on all roads, downed trees. Stay off the road if possible. Be prepared for power and traffic signal outages. Under CA law, come to a complete stop at any malfunctioning traffic signal. Watch for crews and work vehicles. Check on vulnerable neighbors. Never approach downed powerlines – call 911.

Dangerous beach and ocean conditions – hazards include beach erosion, heavy surf, rip currents, storm debris in the water.

MALIBU—On Monday, January 5, the city of Malibu posted on its Facebook page that Topanga Canyon Boulevard has reopened from Grandview to Pacific Coast Highway.

Topanga Canyon Boulevard reopened from Grand View Drive to Pacific Coast Highway following a closure due to rainstorms, rockfall and debris flows. The highway reopened shortly after 11:30 a.m. Monday after workers finished clearing debris flows and rockfall from weekend rainstorms.

Caltrans closed the highway just before midnight on Friday night ahead of expected storms for safety.

The stretch of Topanga Canyon 27 is now reopened to the public with previous restrictions. It remains an active work zone for ongoing recovery efforts from the Palisades Fire and winter storms. It is closed from midnight to 5 a.m. daily and has traffic restrictions including a one-way traffic control section south of the Topanga town center, and a 25 MPH speed limit, no parking, no stopping and no pedestrians allowed in the work zones.

Expect delays and drive cautiously, watching for workers and work vehicles. Fines can be doubled in a work zone.

MALIBU—On Monday, December 29, the city of Malibu indicated that the ground is saturated after the heavy rains, and NWS forecasts a high risk of downed trees through Monday due to moderate to locally strong Santa Ana Winds. Additional rockslides/mudslides are possible later this week with the next round of rain, expected Wednesday, December 31, 2025, through Sunday, January 4, 2026. City Public Works will patrol roads, clear drainage, and pre-place heavy equipment and K-rails, and place backup generators to keep traffic signals operating, if needed.

Residents should be prepared for mudslides, debris flows, rocks, and water on roads, especially in canyons and recent burn areas. Rain rates as low as 0.50 inches per hour can trigger debris flows. Be prepared for power and traffic signal outages. Under California law, come to a complete stop at any malfunctioning traffic signal. Watch for crews and work vehicles and check on vulnerable neighbors.

WEST HOLLYWOOD—A rainstorm is expected to hit Southern California this week, and West Hollywood is expected to be impacted on Tuesday and on Christmas Eve on December 24. There is slight chance of rain on Christmas Day.

According to the National Weather Service office based in Los Angeles and Oxnard, the rain will start on December 23 in the evening, and it will become widespread. The storm will continue for most of Wednesday.

It is estimated that 1 to 2 inches of rain will hit the coast and valleys through Wednesday, with even more rain near the valleys. In addition, there is a 30 percent chance of 4 or more inches. According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain on Thursday, Christmas Day.

MALIBU—The city of Malibu posted on its Facebook page on Sunday, November 16, that some meetings and events at Malibu City Hall have been rescheduled or moved as a result of the heavy rains and flooding from the storms that transpired over the weekend. There were unforeseen water damage at Malibu City Hall that occurred during the storm on Saturday, November 15.

Postponed events will be rescheduled as quickly as possible, with details posted on the city website calendar, and agendacenter at www.malibucity.org/agendacenter, via e-notifications and on social media. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Postponed, Changed, and/or Relocated Events at City Hall:

• The opening reception of “Land, Water, Spirit” art exhibition scheduled for November for 16 is postponed.

• The Senior Center, including the Computer Lab, is closed until further notice.

• All Senior Center classes and events during the week of November 17 – 21 have been moved to the Michael Landon Center at Malibu Bluffs Park for the same times as scheduled.

• All City Commission meetings that were scheduled for the week of November 17 – 21 are either being relocated or rescheduled; updated meeting agenda notices will be posted at www.MalibuCity.org/agendacenter and the website calendar at www.MalibuCity.org/Calendar.

• Meetings and events scheduled for the Civic Theater / Council Chambers will take place as scheduled.

• City Hall remains open for normal hours and services, including the Public Counters. The Community Swimming Pool, City parks, and the Michael Landon Center remain open for normal hours.

• The Malibu Library Speaker Series on November 19 will take place as scheduled.

The public and drivers were warned to expect ongoing rocks and debris in the canyons and flooding along PCH, and lane or road closures for debris removal. City Public Works crews are clearing debris at numerous locations and continue to monitor critical infrastructure and roadways.

SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica announced on its Facebook page that as rain strikes the area on Thursday, November 13, free empty sandbags are available at all Santa Monica Fire Stations and sand is available at Clover Park located at 2600 Ocean Park Blvd. Individuals should bring their own shovel to fill sandbags.

The city is not expecting major impacts but are monitoring the weather and will provide updates as needed.

Some other tips to make sure you’re ready for rainy weather:

-Take your time navigating wet roads
-Turn on your headlights
-Be cautious of pedestrians
-Turn off your sprinklers

MALIBU—On Tuesday, February 11, the city of Malibu disclosed that Malibu Canyon Road will be closed for storm safety starting on Thursday, February 13, at 1 a.m. through Friday, February 14, at 6 p.m. (from Piuma Road to Adamson Flats).

Heavy rain could trigger life-threatening and damaging flooding and debris flows. Moderate to heavy rain is forecasted Wednesday through Friday. Stay alert, be prepared and take precautions.

The Red Cross Palisades Fire Evacuation Center is still open for those who choose to evacuate in the burn area (Westwood Recreation Center, 1350 South Sepulveda Boulevard, Los Angeles).

Malibu is under flood watch, and residents are urged to prepare. Plastic sandbags are prohibited in the city — only burlap and jute are allowed. Do not remove sand from the beaches, as it harms the coastal ecosystem and is illegal under County Law.

TOPANGA CANYON/MALIBU—The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department posted on its Facebook page that an Evacuation Order was issued for Santa Maria Road from Topanga Canyon, Malibu as a result of high risk of mud and debris. The order is in effect from 6 p.m. February 3 through Tuesday, February 6 at 6 p.m.

Staying in the area could cause a risk to personal safety and have limited ability for medical or rescue personnel to get to them. The American Red Cross established an evacuation center for people impacted at ONE Generation, 18255 Victory Boulevard in Reseda, CA 91335. The center can be contacted at (800) 675-5799.

The Agoura Animal Care Center has been established as the location for affected ANIMALS. Their address is 29525 Agoura Road, Agoura, CA 91301.

Individuals living in the Evacuation Order Area must evacuate immediately to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones.

“Remember to gather medications, pets and important documents, and leave immediately. Stay informed of local news, register for emergency alerts at @readylacounty and @nwslosangeles or visit Emergency – COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES (lacounty.gov),” reads a statement from the LASD Facebook page.

MULHOLLAND/BEVERLY HILLS—The Los Angeles Fire Department reported on December 22, they rescued three teenagers after their car toppled down a steep hillside near Mulholland Drive and Java Drive on December 19.

The teens were not injured during the incident, but were stranded at the bottom of the long rain-slickened slope until responders from the LAFD arrived on the scene. Officials were able to hoist them one-at-a-time to the roadway above using a basket stretcher and rope rescue system. No additional details about the accident have been disclosed to the public.
