SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica posted on its Facebook page on Monday, October 28 regarding the PAL Spooktacular Halloween event.

It will be held on Thursday, October 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will be held at the PAL Youth Center located at 1401 Olympic Boulevard. Join the Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL) for a free, family-friendly night of fun.

What individuals who participate can expect:

-Trick-or-treating
-Costumes galore
-Games and activities for all ages

BEVELRY HILLS—The Beverly Hills Police Department indicated in a email to Canyon News a news release with safety tips for the public as Halloween approaches.

To make sure the holiday stays as safe as it is spooky, the BHPD put together a set of safety tips for parents, kids, and drivers.

“As families and children enjoy the spooky fun of Halloween, it’s important for drivers to do their part in keeping our streets safe,” said Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark G. Stainbrook. “If you plan on celebrating, make sure you have a game plan to use a designated driver or rideshare service. Driving impaired, even for a short distance, puts everyone at risk.”

The BHPD notes that Halloween night can be dangerous because of parties, trick-or-treating and other festivities and the nation’s roads.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), adults between the ages of 21 and 34 had the highest percentage (54 percent) of fatalities in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night between 2018 and 2022.

The BHPD offers the following tips for families to be as safe as possible and share the road safely:

Drivers

• Slow down and watch out for more foot traffic in residential neighborhoods.
• Take extra time looking for trick-or-treaters at intersections and entering/exiting driveways.
• Never drive distracted or impaired.
• If you are heading to a local bar, restaurant, or house party and plan to drink, bring the designated sober driver with you, use public transit or a rideshare service, or stay the night.

Parents/Caregivers and Trick-or-Treaters

• Make sure costumes fit well to prevent trips and falls.
• Decorate costumes and bags/buckets with reflective tape.
• Have kids use flashlights or glow sticks to make it easier for drivers to see them.
• Walk on sidewalks when available. Avoid darting into the street or crossing between parked cars.
• Stick to familiar, well-lit routes.
• Look both ways before crossing the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

Driving under the influence can harm others on the road—especially individuals walking or cycling without the protective barrier of a vehicle. Whether driving, biking, or walking, here are some essential tips to keep everyone safe:

-Plan Ahead: Arrange transportation before heading out to events where alcohol might be involved.
-Follow the Rules: Obey traffic signals and signs to ensure a smooth flow.
-Know your limits: Understand how alcohol and drugs affect you personally.
-Wear Your Seatbelt: Always buckle up, no matter how short the trip.
-Watch for Pedestrians: Always yield to those on foot.

SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica announced that the Swim Center will be hosting its Spooky Splash on Friday, October 25. The event will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be the Floating Pumpkin Patch, the Sharks Haunted House, and participants can test their skills on the Floating Obstacle Course. Enjoy Spooky Flicks, arts & crafts, treats, and more.

SANTA MONICA—On Monday, October 14, the Santa Monica Police Department disclosed safety tips as Halloween and Dia de los Muertos approaches. The SMPD asks everyone to have a fun and safe holiday by following these rules:

Walk Safely
-Cross the street at intersections, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
-Look left, right, and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
-Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
-Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
-Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Plan Activities Wisely
-Provide adult supervision at all times for the youngest of your group.
-Remind older children that if not with an adult, to stay together and look out for each other.
-Avoid alleys or shortcuts and stay on parent/guardian approved routes.
-Attend a city-sponsored event like the Police Activities League Spooktacular Event that provides a family safe activity (http://www.smpal.org/).

Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe
-Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
-Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
-When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
-Avoid costumes the include makeshift or replica weapons.

Drive Safely
-Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
-Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians, and on curbs.
-Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
-Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
-Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.

The Santa Monica Police Department is asking residents and visitors take this opportunity to plan for a fun and relaxed Halloween and Dia de los Muertos.

WEST HOLLYWOOD—The city of West Hollywood revealed that its Recreation Services Division will host its annual free Youth Halloween Carnival on Saturday, October 19, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Plummer Park located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard.

The 2024 Halloween Carnival has expanded and will include more carnival games, a pumpkin patch, a trackless train, spooky attractions, arts and crafts, and a tiny tot zone. Entertainment includes festive music, a magic show, costume showcase, dancing, a spooky story time, and a performance by kid favorite Pickle, the West Hollywood’s Drag Laureate, who will once again guest host the event.

Children are invited to dress up in costume to participate in the Costume Showcase. The event will also include food and dessert vendors with plant-based options. Attendees are asked to carpool or walk, as parking at Plummer Park is limited.

WEST HOLLYWOOD—On Tuesday, September 18, the city of West Hollywood posted on its website that the Recreation Services Division’s Howl-O-Ween Pet Costume Showcase will be held on Saturday, October 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Great Lawn at West Hollywood Park, located at 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

According to a news release from the city of West Hollywood, Howl-O-Ween highlights include a parade for pets and guardians and to showcase their costumes, and perhaps dress as your pup’s doggleganger. Dogs must remain on leash for the duration of the event.

Entertainment includes music, a pet-friendly bubble zone, a haunted maze, a soothsayer to unleash your inner spirit animal, community groups, and lots of treats.

In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors to the West Hollywood Park Aquatic and Recreation Center’s Doheny Room (which is adjacent to the surface level of West Hollywood Park).

This is a free event; no RSVP is required. Attendees are asked to carpool, rideshare, or walk, as barking lot parking at West Hollywood Park is limited.

MALIBU—The city of Malibu announced that the family-friendly Halloween Bu-Bash Carnival will transpire on Friday, October 27, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Malibu Bluffs Park located at 24250 Pacific Coast Highway.

The event is open to the public with an entrance fee of $8. Pre-registration is highly recommended at www.MalibuCity.org/Register. A limited number of walk-up registrations will be available on the day of the event.

Kids ages 2 – 10 years old can play carnival games and prizes, bounce houses, and a costume parade. There will be lots of photo opportunities for kids participating in the activities.
