Great Results From Malibu’s Rain Barrel Project

November 25, 2025 ·

MALIBU—On November 24, the city of Malibu Department of Development reported that the Free Rain Barrel project was a success. A total of 150 Free Rain Barrels were given away to 89 families. The water conservation project was a joint effort with the West Basin Municipal Water District. According to the West Basin Municipal Water District newsletter, the Free Rain Barrel giveaway provides 1,500 free rain barrels annually which has the potential to save 650 gallons of water per year. The rainwater collected is not intended for human consumption. Its for keeping the lawn and gardens watered without having to turn on the faucet. It saves water, and it saves families money by lowering their water bills. The gift of a free water barrel saved the recipients the additional cost of the barrels. Rain barrels from local hardware stores can cost anywhere from $60-$135 each. Under California Governor Gavin Newsom, the state has endured water shortages, and water rationing in recent years leaving some fire hydrants at risk of running dry. As the Los Angeles Fire Department continues to remind people, keeping the land moist and rid of debris lowers the risks of more wildfires in the state.   By Sharon

MALIBU—On Monday, April 21, the City of Malibu and California Transportation (CALTRANS) sent out an alert to the public to remind travelers of the lane closures on the southbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) with several lane closures expected today (Tuesday, April 22nd). Details are below.

Construction will cause Caltrans to close at least one southbound and one northbound lane on PCH close to Corral Canyon on Tuesday April 22, from 6:00 a.m. until an unspecified time on Wednesday, April 23rd.

The following came directly from the Malibu City website alerts:

“Caltrans will close lanes on northbound and southbound PCH near Corral Canyon overnight Tuesday, April 22 for construction zone realignment 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with one lane open in each direction. Expect noise and truck activity. The southbound left-turn pocket will close again, possibly through the summer of 2026.

Please drive cautiously, watch for workers and work vehicles – traffic fines are doubled in construction zones under CA law.

This is the third and final stage of construction for the new bridge, part of a project to repair / replace 12 drainage culverts along PCH from Temescal Canyon Rd to the Ventura County line and convert a culvert at Corral Canyon Road into a bridge to allow ocean salmon to swim upstream. The overall project will continue through summer of 2029.”

According to traffic authorities, travelers should expect traffic to run slower than usual and should plan on time delays or seek alternate routes.

December 14 Allied Artists Paint Out, Canceled

December 13, 2024 ·

Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains And Seashores

MALIBU— On December 13, the Allied Artists of Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore, announced that the Golden Hour at Point Mugu State Beach scheduled for December 14, has been canceled due to fire and debris.

According to the original post advertising the event, the initial plan was for attendees to use the parking area as their meeting place. John von Buelow, the host of this month’s paint-out event, was to talk to the group about how he approaches the objects he paints.

As an artist, von Buelow has successfully mastered the ability to capture the movement of the ever-flowing waters, crashing against rocks, while the landscape behind changes vastly.

“He will tell us how he has learned to read and see the water and how it behaves with some examples from his body of work. This lecture format will allow for a different kind of discussion of artmaking, where the artists may focus on their perspective and ideas, and less on the actual production in real time.”
