PACIFIC PALISADES—On October 8, the California U.S. Attorney’s Office issued a press release announcing the arrest of Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, aka “Jonathan Rinder,” aka “Jon Rinder,” of Florida for starting the Palisades Fire. He made his first appearance in court today. Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Assayli made the following statement. “The complaint alleges that a single person’s recklessness caused one of the worst fires Los Angeles has ever seen, resulting in death and widespread destruction in Pacific Palisades. While we cannot bring back what victims lost, we hope this criminal case brings some measure of justice to those affected by this horrific tragedy.” Special Agent in Charge, Kenny Cooper from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), Los Angeles Field Division spoke on the tremendous loss homeowners suffered due to the fire. “At the request of the state and local authorities, [Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms] lead this complex investigation utilizing techniques unique to our agency’s capabilities. The horrific loss of life and property was significantly felt by ATF members, and we are honored to utilize our expertise to provide answers to the community. We remain committed to serving with integrity and distinction.” Official reports from an affidavit filed with the complaint, law enforcement determined that the Palisades fire began with the Lachman fire that started in the early morning hours on January 1, 2025. Firefighters extinguished that fire in a timely fashion. Unbeknownst to all, the fire continued to smolder, beneath the ground, burning roots and dense vegetation. On January 7, heavy winds blew new life into the fire spreading quickly throughout Pacific Palisades causing mass destruction and irreparable damage. Investigators were able to confirm through surveillance footage, cell phone data, and other analysis that it was Rinderknecht who originally set the Lachman Fire just after midnight on New Years Day. According to a press release by the California U.S. Attorney’s office the land where Rinderknecht set the fire was owned by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA). Within a week’s time, the fire spread burning federal property. Jonathan Rinderknecht, who was working as an Uber driver on New Year’s Eve in 2024, made two separate trips to that area. Local law enforcement later noted that they spoke to Rinderknecht that night, and he appeared agitated. After he dropped off his last passenger(s), Rinderknecht, who had once lived in the area, took a ride up to Skull Rock Tailhead. He called an old friend as he walked up the trail. He was listening to a rap song. The beats on video depict catching things on fire. Authorities confirmed that the fire began on January 1, precisely at 12:12 a.m. Rinderknecht indicated that he attempted to call 911 several times but could not get through. He was out of range and could not connect the call until he was at the bottom of the hiking trail when he reported the fire. By that time, a neighbor had already notified authorities. Rinderknecht fled the scene of the crime at a high rate of speed, stopping at just after 1:00 a.m. to take cell phone video of the fire he created. The following information came directly from the press release. “If convicted, Rinderknecht would face a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. ATF is investigating this matter, with substantial assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department and the United States Forest Service.” By Sharon

Fraud And Unfulfilled Insurance Claims Plague Pacific Palisades

June 6, 2025 ·

PACIFIC PALISADES—On June 5, new reports circulated of more and more insurance claims that were not honored by USAA and AAA. Residents who fell victim to the wildfires that struck California in early January have banded together in lawsuits claiming that the insurance companies “overpromised and underdelivered” leaving homeowners in debt when insurance policies did not cover unexpected costs.

Reports indicate that the affected families hired Gregory L. Bentley of the Bentley and More Legal firm who are claiming negligence and restitution on their client’s behalf.

But it’s not only USAA and AAA that are not treating their clients ethically. Reports indicate that State Farm Insurance canceled close to 70 percent of their homeowner policies following the suspension of the first scheduled debris removal leaving their clients in limbo with land that was once premium real estate was now a fire hazard and an eyesore.

As previously reported, the City of Malibu voted unanimously to hire a private security firm to further protect the burn sites from further damage from looters.

The third issue that those who fell victim of California wildfires are dealing with is insurance fraud. Insurance companies have reportedly been inundated with false claims from those who didn’t receive damage and do not deserve compensation.

Some of the Pacific Palisades homeowners have chosen to sell their land at a reduced rate rather than fight the odds on a rebuild.

There are contractors and developers dedicated to rebuilding and restoring Palisades to its former splendor. It is not clear if one of them has chosen to invest in the land from residents who chose to leave rather than rebuild.

They’re lying in wait in the bushes—Jumping out as you walk by on the sidewalk

On May 22, news editor, Hannah Wiley posted the following on her X social media page:

“Was running through GGP this morning when a car kept honking at me. I turned and a coyote was trailing (an uncomfortably close) 15 feet behind me, clearly on the hunt for something in the bushes on the trail’s edge. Thought about this great hKnightsf piece:

On September 25, 2024, when Brittany Furlan, wife of Motley Crue rocker, Tommy Lee rescued her small dog, Neena from a close encounter with a coyote in the backyard by the family pool. Furlan posted surveillance footage along with the following message on Twitter and Instagram.

“Neena is safe. I climbed up the wall and grabbed her out of its mouth. Thank God she’s a little bit fat because he couldn’t make it over the wall with her. If it was teenie she would’ve been gone. This is in Broad daylight at 1:00 p.m. They are getting more brazen and hungrier. Please be safe. I’m not even letting the dogs out anymore. This is ridiculous. Hug your babies extra tight.”

On September 24, 2024, Justin Rivard was walking his three tiny dogs with a friend on San Francisco Beach when a coyote attacked one of the dogs right in front of them.

CALIFORNIA—On January 25, President Trump accompanied by First Lady, Melania Trump, boarded Marine One to survey storm damage in North Carolina and the aftermath of rampant wildfires in southern California.

Governor Gavin Newsom greeted President and First Lady Melania Trump on the tarmac as they exited the plane at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The President met with local leaders in both states assuring them of his support indicating that the Trump Administration will be waiving the normally required permits needed to begin the debris clean-up. Trump said, “That could take up to 10 years. We want to get it done in 10 days.”

Before sitting down with Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass, and others, Trump took an aerial tour and saw the ruins of the Pacific Palisades, Eaton, and Hughes fires, among others.

“You really can’t believe it, unless you see it,” Trump stated publicly.

While Trump was in California touring the aftermath of the fires, and meeting with some of the people who lost their homes, Pete Hegseth was confirmed as U.S. Secretary of Defense. Reporters following the President called out questions. One asked the President, what he thought about outgoing Senator, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) voting against confirming Hegseth.

Trump indicated that he had not heard that, but it didn’t matter. What mattress is that “We Won.” Hegseth brought in at least 50 votes to confirm the win.
