Malibu City Council Approves Separation Package For School District

MALIBU—On Wednesday, December 8, the Malibu City Council met during a session, where all council members voted in favor of a full separation package, which will create an independent Malibu Unified School District from the current Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. On December 1, the Santa Monica–Malibu Unified School District Board of Education voted on the same issue and approved separating the district into two. Included in the package are a Property Tax Revenue Sharing Agreement, an Operational Transfer Agreement, and a Joint Powers Agreement. The next step in the process is for the Santa Monica City Council and Malibu City Council to draft the legislation that is necessary to formally create the new separate school districts.   By Daniel Diquinzio
