MALIBU—On Thursday, October 16, the city of Malibu will partake in the Great Shakeout Drill.

At 10:16 a.m., Malibu City Hall staff will join millions of people in Southern California and around the world to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” for the Great ShakeOut, the world’s largest simultaneous earthquake preparedness drill.

Those who are at Malibu City Hall at that time, should join for the exercise. It is to prepare individuals if a major earthquake strikes Southern California. They should be prepared to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” when you feel shaking. Get underneath a desk or table and hold on to protect yourself from falling debris or flying furniture.

Here are a few basic tips on earthquake preparedness:

-Secure objects: Secure heavy objects that could fall, overturn, or slide during an earthquake, such as tall furniture, equipment, and wall-mounted items.

-Create an emergency supply kit: Include food, water, first aid, prescription medications, a flashlight, emergency radio and other essentials. See tips: https://www.ready.gov/kit.

-Download the MyShake mobile app: This app for iPhone and Android devices provides earthquake warnings in California.

-Review emergency procedures: Review evacuation procedures and exit routes from your building and your family’s home emergency plan.

-Sign up for alerts: Sign up for emergency alerts from the City at www.MalibuCity.org/alerts and from LA County at https://ready.lacounty.gov/alerts/.
