Flash Flooding And Mudflow Forecast Alert For Malibu

MALIBU—The city of Malibu posted on its Facebook page on Monday, October 13 that the Los Angeles County Public Works issued a PHASE 1 mudflow forecast for the Franklin Fire and Palisades Fire burn areas in Malibu.

PHASE 1 includes low risk of debris flows over Palisades Fire burn scars & flash flooding in mountains. The debris flow forecast is valid from Monday October 13, at 10 p.m. through Wednesday October 15, at 6 a.m.

Flash flood watches are under effect over the Franklin and Palisades burn scars, which can trigger life-threatening and damaging flooding and debris flows. Stay alert, be prepared and avoid the region.

Individuals should be prepared for potential mudslides, debris flows, rocks and water in the roads in all recent burn areas, especially canyon roads. It only takes half an inch per hour of rain to start a debris flow. All LA County Fire Stations have sandbags.

City Offers Free Sand-Filled Sandbags To Residents, Businesses

WEST HOLLYWOOD—On Monday, October 13 the city of West Hollywood posted on its Facebook page that according to the National Weather Service, a moderate to strong winter-like storm system will bring rain to the region on Monday, October 13 and Tuesday, October 14, and is expected to yield 1.5 to 3 inches of rain by Wednesday morning.

The city is offering a limited supply of free sand-filled sandbags to West Hollywood residents and businesses as heavy rains are forecast throughout Southern California in the coming days. Sandbags can help direct flowing water away from structures.

Free sandbags are limited to 10 per resident or business while supplies last. They are available for pick-up by appointment at the City of West Hollywood’s Operations Center, located at 7317 Romaine Street. Residents and business owners may call (323) 848-6591 or send an email to phertz@weho.org – to schedule an appointment to pick up sandbags on Tuesday, October 14, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Please note, there are no weekend pick-ups scheduled at this time and sandbags are available only while supplies last. Sandbag pick-up may be extended into early next week if weather requires and supplies are available.

During heavy rains and cold temperatures, stay prepared:

-Keep emergency supplies, such as a flashlight, water, food, a first-aid kit, portable radio, and extra batteries on-hand and easily accessible.

-Clear all drains and rain gutters on your property and dispose of all trash and yard trimmings properly to avoid blocking drains.

-Know how to turn off utilities.

-Monitor forecasts to be aware of weather that may impact the area.

As a reminder, driving in rain, whether a drizzle or a heavy downpour, can be dangerous. Rainy conditions are directly associated with higher accident rates. Adjust driving style for wet roads and reduced visibility. The following tips will help ensure driving safely during rainy days: slow down; turn on headlights; use windshield wipers; maintain a safe distance; avoid heavy braking; watch for standing water; let off the accelerator when hydroplaning; and ventilate your car during rain.

4.1 Magnitude Earthquake Felt In Malibu

MALIBU—On Sunday, March 9, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the Westlake Village was felt in the city of Malibu.

The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake at 1:03 p.m., followed by 2.5, 3.0, 2.8 quakes within a few minutes. Minor earthquakes are a strong preparedness reminder; check your emergency supplies and review emergency plans.

As a reminder, the city of Malibu is informing the public to check the expiration dates of food, water, batteries and medication in your emergency supplies. Review earthquake insurance. If encountering or feeling an earthquake, DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON. The National Weather Service forecast a series of rainstorms that will impact Malibu this coming week. Recent burn areas are at a higher risk of debris flows and water runoff that may contain hazardous substances. Get ready and take extra precautions:

-Monitor local news for emergency information

-Pick up sandbags before anticipated rains

Flash-Flood Watch In Effect For Malibu February 13

MALIBU—On Monday, February 13, the city of Malibu announced that the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch in and around the Franklin and Palisades Fires burn areas in Malibu. The flood watch is in effect starting Thursday afternoon through the late night.

The NWS warns that heavy rain over the burn scars could trigger life-threatening and damaging flooding and debris flows. Moderate to heavy rain is forecasted Wednesday through Friday. The public is advised to stay alert, be prepared and take precautions.

City Of Malibu Warns Of Dangerous Wildfire Weather

MALIBU—On Monday, December 30, the city of Malibu posted on its Facebook page that fire weather conditions were upgraded to Red Flag Warning for 12 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31 thru Wednesday, January 1, 2025 in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Dangerous wildfire weather is forecast for LA County, including Malibu from December 30, 2024 thru January 2, 2025 due to Santa Ana winds & low humidity. Be prepared for fires, evacuations & power outages. Local weather info: https://www.weather.gov/lox/.

The public should be prepared for potential fires, evacuations, power & traffic signal outages, hazardous roads. Come to a complete stop at any malfunctioning traffic signal.
While Malibu City Hall is closed for the winter break until 1/2, city staff are closely monitoring wildfire weather conditions, and will post emergency information via alerts, the website www.malibucity.org, and social media, and are ready to activate the Emergency Operations Center if necessary.

Individuals should check emergency plan and supplies, including evacuation routes and reunification locations, and plan for your pets. Check the Malibu emergency survival guide: http://www.malibucity.org/survivalguide.

People with disabilities, and those who rely on medical or mobility devices, and owners of horses and livestock should consider leaving the area early. Be extremely cautious with any activities that could start a fire, such as working with landscaping equipment.

Trancas Park and Charmlee Park will be closed for safety Tuesday, December 31, 2024 thru Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Individuals can closely monitor weather conditions and emergency information on local news, especially AM / FM radio and 99.1 FM KBUU with handheld and car radios, which will work if the power is out.
