Holiday Tree Collection In Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica posted on its Facebook page details for residents who need to get rid of their Christmas tree. There is no 3-1-1- request required.

Residents must remove all decorations, stand and lights. The tree should be placed on the curb or in the alley for automatic pick up. The city will be picking up trees from December 26, 2024 thru January 31, 2025.

“Our crews will collect the trees and give them a second life as mulch, keeping Santa Monica clean and sustainable. Please allow 10 business days for pick-up,” the city of Santa Monica stated in the post.

The public is warned to NOT put trees in parks or lots. Anyone with questions should email: zerowaste@santamonica.gov.

End-Of-Year Trash And Recycling Reminders

WEST HOLLYWOOD—The city of West Hollywood announced on its Facebook page on December 18 that Athens Services will not pick up trash on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024 or New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025. Services will continue the following day.

Christmas trees are recyclable starting December 26, 2024, through January 11, 2025, Athens Services will pick them up. Residents should be sure to strip your tree of all its accessories (no ornaments, lights, or tinsel), cut it in half if it’s over six feet, and skip the flocking or plastic bags.

All boxes, wrapping paper, and packaging can go right into your recycling bin. Residents getting rid of old electronics can book a free e-waste pickup or visit the UCLA S.A.F.E. Drop-Off Center to give them a second life.

End-Of-Year Trash And Recycling Information In WeHo

WEST HOLLYWOOD—On Monday, December 9, the city of West Hollywood indicated in a news release that they are spreading the word about end-of-year trash and recycling information.

The city’s solid waste hauler, Athens Services, will have no pickup of trash on Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25, 2024, or on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Services will be provided one day later than the regularly scheduled pickup day.

Holiday trees are 100 percent recyclable. Athens Services will collect holiday trees on regular pickup days beginning Thursday, December 26, 2024 through Saturday, January 11, 2025.

Tips to ensure collection of your holiday tree: remove stands, ornaments, lights and tinsel; place holiday trees at the curb; trees over six feet in length must be cut in half; trees with flocking or fire retardants will not be accepted; and please do not leave the tree in a plastic bag as the bag gets caught in the chipper blades. Trees not picked up during the recycle window must be cut up and placed in yard waste containers.

Remember that gift boxes, wrapping paper, and other paper packaging can be recycled with regular paper and cardboard recycling.

During the holidays, people will be replacing old electronics. Residents should take old electronics to a collection center such as the UCLA S.A.F.E. Drop-Off Center (call 1-800-773-2489 for more information) or may schedule an e-waste pickup with Athens Services. Bulky or large items, such as refrigerators, carpet, and wood, can be picked up at no charge to residents, limited to a maximum of two items. Call Athens Services directly at (888) 336-6100 for details and to arrange pickup.

Anyon generating a larger amount of trash than usual and your trash and recycling bins are full or cannot accommodate the additional trash – please DO NOT place extra trash and recycling on the ground with bins or carts. Please contact Athens Services to schedule extra services to accommodate your extra trash and recycling.

Santa Monica Hosting Community Recycling Event

SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica posted on its Facebook page on Wednesday, November 6 that it will be holding a community recycling event on Saturday, November 16. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2500 Michigan Ave.

The free recycling event is for Santa Monica residents only and they must bring proof of residency.

Bring your used mattresses, box springs, electronic waste and up to five boxes of paper for shredding! Shredding will happen on-site, and the paper will be recycled.
Anyone with questions can call customer service at (866) 311-7266.

Tips for a successful event:

-Please remain in your car unless otherwise instructed
-Batteries must be brought in a separate container
-Mattresses and box springs must be clean and dry

Accepted items:

-Up to 5 banker boxes of paper

-Radios & stereo equipment
-printers (please remove ink cartridges)
-Batteries

Organic Waste Recycling Program Training August 14

MALIBU—On July 30, the city of Malibu announced on its website that community members are invited to join the upcoming virtual workshops to learn about the importance of, and be able to participate in, the City’s Organic Waste Recycling Program, on Wednesday, August 14, at 7 p.m.

The organic Waste Recycling Program is an important way that Malibu can fulfill its commitment as a community to be part of the efforts to address climate change and protect the environment.

The virtual workshops are meant to help residents properly separate their organic waste and learn about the importance of organics recycling.

The city of Malibu was awarded state grant funds from SB 1383 to help implement its Organic Waste Recycling Program. Attendees will receive a free kitchen scraps collection caddy (limit one per household). The 1.9 gallon, dishwasher-safe caddies are easy to fill, carry, empty, and clean, offering a convenient way to collect food scraps to be recycled.

Individuals who complete the workshop can contact Environmental Programs staff at 310-456-2489 to arrange to pick up their caddy at Malibu City Hall. Participants should be prepared to show identification with a Malibu address and proof of attendance.

Malibu has created a free Zero Waste Guide to help residents learn how to sort their food scraps based on their hauler’s requirements. The guide is available on the website.

Each waste hauler serving Malibu has varied requirements. Malibu Garbage Disposal District customers can learn more at www.CleanLA.com/OrganicWaste and other city residents can learn more at www.MalibuCity.org/organics.

Beverly Hills Celebrating Earth Day April 28

BEVERLY HILLS—The city of Beverly Hills will celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 28 at the Farmer’s Market. This will be the 21st year of the Annual Earth Day event. The city indicated on its website that the theme for 2024 is “planet vs. plastic.”

The Public Works department will have a booth with information about Beverly Hills sustainability efforts, vendor and organizations booths, free compost giveaway, and free shredding services for the community take part of on that day.

Earth Day Celebration Events:

Earth Day Celebration at Farmer’s Market, free shredding, e-waste booth and compost give away on April 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Events are open to all community members.

When it comes to shredding, community members will be able to shred old documents safely, securely and pick up some compost for FREE.

Participants are expected to follow these rules for everyone’s safety:

• Noncompliance with these instructions results in non-participation.
• Please remain in vehicle at all times, and wait for instructions from staff.
• Drop off only.
• 50 pound limit per person.
• Staff will not open vehicle door or enter vehicle cabin.
• First come first serve.
• Stage parking line will be on Burton way in front of courthouse and the corner of Civic Center Dr. Exit through the alley on Foothill Rd

Household Hazardous And Electronic Waste Collection June 17

MALIBU—Residents will be able to drop off old paint, motor oil, household chemicals, batteries and electronics to be safely and properly disposed of at the upcoming Household Hazardous and Electronic Waste Collection Saturday, June 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the upper parking lot of Malibu City Hall.

The city of Malibu reported on its website that it is important to properly dispose of certain types of household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste. All containers must be clearly labeled to identify the contents. Maximum amount of paint/motor oil accepted is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip.

Accepted materials list:

-Paint (water-based only)

-Used motor oil

-Anti-freeze

-Automotive and household batteries

-Compact fluorescent bulbs (unbroken)

-Electronics

City schedules its events on the third Saturday in February, April, June, August, and October. If it rains, the event will be cancelled.

Malibu Waste Disposal Event April 15

MALIBU—On Saturday, April 15, a waste disposal event will take place in Malibu. The event will take place from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Malibu City Hall – Upper Parking Lot at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road. Attendance is free.

The event will also be held on the third Saturday of June, August, and October. The event will be cancelled under rainy conditions.
