MALIBU—On June 11, it was reported that Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s brother Kenneth and his wife, Cindy have joined a class action lawsuit suing the city for property loss and damages incurred due to the loss of their Malibu home in the Palisades Fire in January 2026. Kenneth Bass, 78, and his wife filed their lawsuit on May 18, 2026. The legal complaint was filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming damages due to smoke inhalation, emotional distress, and mental anguish over the loss of their home located at 3045 Rambla Pacifico. They are requesting a trial by jury, and names the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power in the lawsuit. The lawsuit contends that in January 2025, there was not enough water/water pressure to put out the fires that burnt down homes, and displaced families. The 117-million-gallon, Santa Ynez Reservoir laid empty under the supervision of California Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Bass, as part of the region burned. Mayor Bass indicated that she too had family members, (her brother and sister-in-law) who lost their home. Mayor Bass left the country and flew to Ghana as Palisades burned. Their home sat on a 1.5-acre hillside overlooking Malibu Pier and Surfrider Beach. The main house on the property was a total loss. The Bass’s sold off the 1.25 acres of land on May 1, 2025, for $2 million to Wings 3045 LLC, a real estate developer in a blind trust. The 3045 mimics the street address of the property purchased. They lived in their Malibu home for around four decades. Real estate records indicate that on November 19, 2015, Kenneth and Cindy transferred their property from their individual names into the Kenneth and Cindy Bass 2015 Trust. According to Zillow, the 2,792 square foot residence was built in 1983. From the 1980s records were not properly digitized, and the names and real estate records of the original owners of the Bass property is shielded from public view. By Sharon

PACIFIC PALISADES—On February 1, in a joint press release the Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and the Los Angeles Police Department Police Chief, Jim McDonnell announced that all checkpoints currently in Pacific Palisades will remain in place. Governor Newsom, promised additional law enforcement resources in to keep Pacific Palisades closed to the public.

“I am grateful to Governor Newsom for his continued partnership as we respond to this unprecedented disaster. We continue to adapt in real time to this dynamic situation. This plan secures Palisades and eases the strain on LAPD, whose ability to respond across L.A. has been impacted for nearly one month. My priority continues to be rebuilding the Pallisades as rapidly and safely as possible,” Mayor Bass stated.

Newsom reiterated what Mayor Bass said in the following statement.

“To the survivors of these fires: We have your back, the state will be here every step of the way until your community is fully recovered. By deploying additional state law enforcement resources we’re ensuring the Palisades remains secure while freeing up LAPD to focus on the public safety needs of the entire city.”

LAPD Chief McDonnell reassured the public of the Police Department’s support.

“The Los Angeles Police Department remains committed to working alongside our law enforcement partners to ensure the burn area remains safe. We appreciate their support as we continue to service the needs of all Angelenos.”

The following information came directly from the press release that may be found on Mayor Bass’s webpage.

“Checkpoints and proof-of-residence or entry pass will still be required to enter the Palisades.

On Sunday, resident and contractor access passes can be obtained at 1150 Pacific Coast Highway (Lot 3) in the City of Santa Monica between 10 AM and 5 PM.

Contractors are allowed in the fire area and are required to provide identification and proof that they have been hired by specific residents within the impacted areas.

Contractors must report to the check-in area (Lot 3) each day to be granted access and will be provided a pass to enter.

PCH will reopen one lane in each direction at reduced speeds on Monday. Local traffic only is encouraged. New locations to obtain resident and contractor access passes will be announced Sunday, February 2nd.”

BRENTWOOD—On Saturday, April 13, Vice President, Kamala Harris traveled back to her home state of California via Air Force Two for a series of events. The Patch notified the public of road traffic delays and road closures upon her arrival and departure. The southbound 405 Freeway in Brentwood on April 16, as the Harris Motorcade with her security detail prepared for her departure at the Los Angeles International Airport for a flight to Las Vegas, Nevada.

Harris and First Husband, Doug Emhoff first attended a fundraising event at the home of Family Guy creator, Seth MacFarlane’s home. The event was attended by two to three dozen people including Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass. Fundraising efforts reportedly brought in approximately $1.5 million to Biden’s Victory Fund.  The Second Couple keeps a home in nearby Brentwood.

On April 13, Harris made a surprise appearance at the Power, Leadership & Influence of the Black Woman event held at the Fairmont Century Plaza from 10:30-2:00 p.m.

The Power in Leadership event, entitled, “An Intimate Conversation with Laphonza Butler,” featured; Senator Laphonza Butler (D-CA), co-founder of Black Lives Matter, Malina Abdullah, President and CEO of Brotherhood Crusade, Charisse Bremond Weaver, L.A. County Supervisor, Holly Mitchell, President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, Yvonne Wheeler, and Producer, actress, and singer, Marla Gibbs

According to the verbiage of Vice President Harris was introduced as a champion of abortion. She touched on the age-old debate that the overturning of Roe v. Wade denies a woman who may have been a victim of incest or rape, “the right to an abortion.” Scientific data proves otherwise as the actual percentage of women seeking an abortion who could qualify for that exemption is reportedly less than one percent.

Reports indicate that Harris attended a meeting of President Biden’s Nation Security team via secure internet. President Biden was at a separate campaign event in Scranton, Pennsylvania at the time.
