MALIBU—The city of Malibu’s Summer 2026 Recreation Guide and City Newsletter are available online and were mailed to Malibu residents the week of May 4.

Summer recreation programs are designed to bring the community together and promote healthy lifestyles for residents of every age. Offerings range from youth camps and swim lessons to wellness classes and inclusive access programs for people of all abilities.

Programs running June through August include:

-CineMalibu Outdoor Movies in the Park
-Learn to Swim Lessons (group and private options)
-Summer Day Camps
-Complimentary Wellness Workshops with The Mindry
-Night Hikes at Charmlee Wilderness Park
-Teen Workshops in Comedy, Photography, Poetry, and Self-defense
-Senior Center Programs including Chair Yoga, Monthly Excursions, and Tech Help

The Guide introduces a new series of Inclusive Recreation programs designed to provide accessible and welcoming activities for people of all abilities. Summer offerings include coloring, film screenings, sensory swimming, and yoga.

MALIBU—On May 15, the city of Malibu announced on its Facebook page that the Legacy Park Art Walk is taking place for several Sundays starting May 17. Other events include on June 14, July 12, August 9 and September 13.

Coordinated by the Malibu Arts Association and hosted by the city of Malibu Arts Commission, the free monthly events feature local artists showcasing and selling original artwork and prints inspired by Malibu’s natural beauty.

SANTA MONICA—On December 22, the Los Angeles Department of Public Health (LACDPH) sent out a public health warning for area beaches including Malibu and Santa Monica about bacteria in the water.

“An Ocean Water Quality Rain Advisory has been declared for all Los Angeles County beaches. The advisory will be in effect at least until 8:00 pm, Friday, December 22, 2023. Beach users are cautioned to avoid water contact for at least 72 hours after significant rainfall. This advisory may be extended depending upon further rainfall,” read a statement from the LACDPH website.

They are reminding the public that beach water quality testing is done routinely.

“A beach is closed anytime there is a known sewage or chemical spill impacting ocean waters. Water contact may cause someone to become ill,” the LACDPH noted. 

“A rain advisory is issued when there is significant rainfall that may cause bacteria levels in ocean waters to increase. Bacteria levels can increase significantly during and after rainstorms, as contaminants within the runoff enter the ocean. Bacteria levels may remain elevated for up to three days depending upon the intensity of the rain and the volume of runoff. Elevated bacteria levels in ocean water may cause illness, especially in children and the elderly. The Department of Public Health recommends that beach users avoid contact with ocean water for three days after significant rainfall, especially near flowing storm drains, creeks, and rivers.”

Malibu received a bacterium warning alerting the public to avoid contact with ocean water, creeks, and streams for at least three days following rainfall to avoid sickness from contamination.

According to the National Weather Service, heavy rainfall is expected throughout Southern California with upwards of eight inches of rain possible in some areas.

MALIBU—On Saturday, April 15, a waste disposal event will take place in Malibu. The event will take place from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Malibu City Hall – Upper Parking Lot at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road. Attendance is free.

The event will also be held on the third Saturday of June, August, and October. The event will be cancelled under rainy conditions.

The city of Malibu website states:

EVENT STAFF WILL ONLY REMOVE HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS AND ELECTRONIC WASTE FROM YOUR TRUNK/PICK-UP BED.

Individuals are asked to properly dispose of certain types of household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste. All containers must be clearly labeled to identify the contents. Maximum amount of paint/motor oil accepted is 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip.
