BEVERLY HILLS—On Monday, September 16, the city of Beverly Hills posted on its Facebook page that it will be holding a free drive-thru household hazardous and e-waste collection event on Saturday, September 28.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West 3rd Street between Foothill Rd. & Civic Center Dr. The event will allow residents the opportunity to safely dispose of old batteries, electronics, paints and more items.

Hazardous Waste Collection Events, operated by the County and Sanitation Districts, are one-day, drive-through collection events where residents are invited to drive to a specific location to drop off their household hazardous waste and electronic waste (e-waste). There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste per trip.

Toxic chemicals typically found in a household:
-Oven cleaner
-Pool supplies
-Used motor oil
-Oil paint products

Do not place any of these unused items or other toxic chemicals into any container. Only empty toxic containers (with lids removed) are to be placed with your trash.

To properly and safely dispose of hazardous waste, call the Los Angeles County Hazardous Waste Roundup Hotline: (800) 552-5218 or City of Los Angeles (800) 98-TOXIC or attend a county sponsored round-up.

WESTWOOD—On Friday, July 5, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported hazardous materials being released in Westwood.

The LAFD indicated the incident transpired at 7:10 p.m. at 215 VA, where firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming from the sidewalk and from a vault.

Crews set up a perimeter, asked nearby building occupants to close doors/windows and shelter in place, and deployed monitoring equipment.

Hazardous Materials Specialists determined that the smoke/white vapor cloud coming from underground was a large amount of steam from an underground construction operation and that there was no hazard present and determined the site is safe. There were no reports of any injuries during the incident.

MALIBU—Community members are invited to give their input on the update of the regional Hazard Mitigation Plan at the Las Virgenes-Malibu Council of Governments (LVMCOG) virtual meeting on Thursday, October 26. The meeting will take place from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. via Zoom.

The city of Malibu reported on its website, the LVMCOG includes the cities of Malibu, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, and Westlake Village. Hazard Mitigation Plans are developed as a regional plan since some hazards cross jurisdictional boundaries.

The goal of the meeting is to gather input from the community on how to decrease the impacts of natural disasters and other hazards in the area.

During the meeting, results of a recent Risk Survey will be shared and used for discussion to review the top hazards that are issues for residents, what preparedness actions they have taken, and additional hazard reduction efforts that are needed to better protect the community.
