SANTA MONICA—On Monday, July 20, the city of Santa Monica announced that Appian Way, the roadway that provides access to the south side of the Pier parking lot, will be closed to all vehicles from Monday, July 27, through Monday, August 3.

Part of the Santa Monica Pier Bridge Replacement Project, the temporary road closure is necessary to allow crews to safely demolish a portion of the existing Pier Bridge over the roadway. The closure will be contained to the area just beneath the existing bridge, north of Seaside Terrace.

The Santa Monica Pier is expected to remain open throughout the closure, including all restaurants, shops, attractions, businesses and amenities.

Vehicle access to Parking Lot 1 North will remain available from Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) throughout the closure. Visitors can use one of the following nearby public parking facilities during the closure:

-Beach Lot 4 South
-Beach Lot 3 North
-Parking Structure 8

Clearly marked parking, pedestrian routes and wayfinding signage will guide visitors to the Pier. Pedestrian access to the Pier and Ocean Front Walk will remain available throughout construction.

Public transit and rideshare services are available to reach the Pier during the closure. Several local bus routes and the Metro E Line provide convenient access to downtown Santa Monica, with the Pier just a short walk away. Designated rideshare pick-up and drop-off locations near the Pier will remain accessible throughout the closure.

Visitors should plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow posted detour, parking and pedestrian signage while traveling to and from the Pier during the temporary closure.

The Santa Monica Pier Bridge Replacement Project will replace the nearly 90-year-old bridge that serves as the primary vehicle access to the Pier. The project will improve safety, accessibility and the long-term reliability of this important connection while maintaining access to the Pier throughout construction whenever possible.

MALIBU—On February 21, the city of Malibu revealed on its Facebook page that Caltrans expanded PCH access for:

-Burn area residents

-Essential businesses in the burn area, such as brick-and-mortar-type businesses, caretakers, healthcare workers, grocery workers, babysitters, etc.

-School bus traffic

Burn area access passes will be distributed by the LA County Sheriff’s Department for Malibu, Sunset Mesa, Topanga Canyon and unincorporated LA County residents in the burn area, as well as contractors hired by burn area residents only. Eligibility for essential businesses will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

Access passes are only available for those who must reach properties or conduct approved essential activities within the impacted areas. Passes are not being issued for general travel along PCH or solely based on residency in Malibu.

Pass pick up is daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Malibu City Hall (23825 Stuart Ranch Rd, Malibu). Burn Area Resident verification:

-Valid ID or proof of address (utility bill, tax bill, paystub or bank statement)

-Each household member must have a pass & display it on their dashboard

Burn Area Contractor verification:

-Limited to assessments, security, cleaning and remediation services.

-Tow & moving companies require residents to meet them at the checkpoint.

Burn Area Essential Business verification:

-Verification of business ownership

-Paystub or W-2

Access Points:

-Chautauqua Blvd (Los Angeles)

-Carbon Beach Terrace (Malibu)

SANTA MONICA—The city of Santa Monica announced on its website that it is partnering with Providence St. John to provide the public with complimentary help with nutrition and health care access at Virginia Avenue Park every Tuesday starting July 11.

As part of Providence St. John’s Community Health Program, trained community health workers will be available to meet in person with community members at the Park Center Building at Virginia Avenue Park on the first Tuesday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the second, third, and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The trained Providence St. John’s staff will assist with enrollment in CalFresh, the State of California’s food subsidy program developed to expand nutrition through access to healthy foods. Staff will help community members navigate enrollment and questions for MediCal and Medicare.
