MALIBU—At 1:27 p.m. on July 29, the National Weather Service Station for Los Angeles and Oxnard issued a High Surf Advisory for beaches along the Malibu Coast through 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 2. These conditions include powerful waves, predicted to reach 3 to 5 feet.

Waves can drag swimmers and surfers into the ocean and can cause inexperienced people to drown.  If a small boat is taken out in these conditions, it could capsize near the beach.  These waves can also knock people off rocks and jetties.

Other hazards will also occur including debris that can end up in the water, beach erosion, and sneaker waves. Residents should take the following steps when going to the beach by avoiding the water. If it is necessary to enter the water, they should ask lifeguards for information about the conditions in the water and stay close to lifeguard towers with an on-duty lifeguard.

Children should not be allowed to enter the water or play near the water unless adults are nearby to supervise them. A coastal flooding report from is in effect from 5 p.m. July 29 through 3 a.m. on August 1.
