MALIBU—The city of Malibu is alerting the public about the upcoming SCE Meeting on Wildfire Safety and Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS).
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Malibu City Hall and virtual join in-person or virtually and make your voices heard.
The city of Malibu noted on its Facebook page that “SCE’s Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) have left the community in communications blackouts, as seen during the Franklin and Palisades fires, compounding wildfire dangers. Without emergency info on evacuations, shelters, and road closures, residents cannot make informed decisions, and the City’s ability to provide critical information is crippled. Long outages also disrupt work, school, commuting, and cause economic and quality of life impacts.”
Over the summer, SCE announced more frequent and longer PSPSs, without providing mitigation such as backup power for traffic signals and cell towers. SCE has been authorized by the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) since 2018 to proactively shut off power during hazardous fire weather (wind, humidity) to reduce the risk of equipment-caused fires—often for days, even without major wind.
