SANTA MONICA—On July 22, just before 1:00 p.m., Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) officers were in a high-speed chase with a suspect driving a dark gray sedan.

The pursuit began in South Los Angeles of a suspect who was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. Video footage was captured by Sky5 hovering overhead. The suspect was reportedly traveling as speeds more than 100 m.p.h. The pursuit ended by the Santa Monica Pier.

Multiple social media posts with video surveillance footage of the chase showed a white dog on a leash near the entrance of the pier with the suspect. Police had the suspect face-down on the pavement. He was then taken into custody without any further incident.

The dog, who was unharmed, loaded back into its owner’s Toyota Corolla during the arrest until officers came back to retrieve it.
