MALIBU—Actor Michael Madsen, known for his roles in the Quentin Tarantino films, “Reservoir Dogs” and “Kill Bill Vol. 1” died on Thursday, July 3. The actor was found inside his Malibu home and was reported to have sufferred a cardiac arrest after being found unresponsive by emergency responders and pronounced dead at 8:25 a.m.
TMZ reported Michael’s assistant and friend, Dougie Smith noted the actor was just given a clean bill of health from his doctor days before his death, after having a visit at UCLA. Michael was expected to appear at the upcoming Nashville Comic-Con and was gearing up to promote his new book, “Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems.”
He made his screen debut in 1982 in “WarGames.” From there, he parlayed his success into Tarantino’s 1992 classic “Reservoir Dogs” alongside Harvey Keitel and Tim Rother. Madsen would become a frequent collaborator with Tarantino appearing in “Kill Bill Vol. 2,” “The Hateful, Eight” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in 2019.
Madsen also appeared in the films “Thelma & Louise,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Species,” “Donnie Brasco,” “Die Another Day,” “Sin City” and “Scary Movie 4.” He also made appearances in TV on the series “St. Elsewhere,” “CSI: Miami,” “24,” “Blue Bloods” and “Hawaii Five-O.”
He was honored at the 9th Annual Malibu Film Festival in April 2008. He won the Best Actor award at the Boston Film Festival in 2007 for his role in the film “Strength and Honour.”
Madsen leaves behind four children: Christian, Max, Luke and Calvin. His son Hudson died from suicide in January 2022. His sister, Academy Award nominee, Virigina Madsen, posted the following statement on her Instagram in response to her brother’s death:
“My brother Michael has left the stage. He was thunder and velvet. Mischief wrapped in tenderness. A poet disguised as an outlaw. A father, a son, a brother—etched in contradiction, tempered by love that left its mark.
We’re not mourning a public figure. We’re not mourning a myth—but flesh and blood and ferocious heart.
Who stormed through life loud, brilliant, and half on fire. Who leaves us echoes—gruff, brilliant, unrepeatable—half legend, half lullaby.
I’ll miss our inside jokes, the sudden laughter, the sound of him. I’ll miss the boy he was before the legend. I miss my big brother.
Thank you to everyone reaching out with love and memory. In time, we’ll share how we plan to celebrate his life. But for now—we stay close, and let the silence say what words can’t.”
