WESTWOOD—On Thursday, January 30, the UCLA PD indicated on its Facebook page that they received multiple reports of scams involving individuals asking to borrow a victim’s cell phone to call family members.

Once the phone is in their possession, the scammers make unauthorized Venmo transfers and delete notifications. The UCLA PD is warning the public to stay safe and protect their phone by:

-Don’t lend your phone to strangers.

-If you do, keep it in sight and require speakerphone.

-Never allow access to your apps or financial info.

-Use strong security—enable Face ID, PINs, or two-factor authentication.

-Disable auto-login for banking/payment apps.

-Anyone who has been targeted should call UCPD’s 24/7 dispatch at (310) 825-1491.

On Friday, January 31, the UCLA Police Department reported that officers responded after witnesses saw suspects stealing mail from an apartment building.

A coordinated search led to their arrest three blocks away. Officers discovered burglary tools, drugs, and pepper spray on a convicted felon. Both suspects now face multiple criminal charges and are in county jail.

The name and ages of the suspects taken into custody have not been disclosed by the UCLA PD.
